Frequently Asked Questions
When you’re a busy roofing contractor, hiring the right back office staff as soon as possible is a must.
Hiring someone who is already familiar with roofing makes a lot of sense and is great if possible. However, the pros at Elite suggest broadening your search.
Why are we suggesting you look outside the industry for your next hire? Well, for starters, exterior remodeling is a very small, niche industry. And storm restoration is even smaller. When you only look within that pool of applicants, you’re severely limiting the number of potential candidates.
You can always teach a new hire about the industry; you don’t have the time to teach the basic skills he or she will need to do the job well. Attention to detail, punctuality, good organization, and phone etiquette are skills you need your new hire to have the day he or she starts.
You’ve probably heard the saying, “slow to hire, quick to fire.” Well, that’s not very practical for your business.
Finding a qualified candidate takes time and let’s face it, it’s a pain. Creating and posting ads, sorting through resumes, setting up interviews, etc. takes time, and for a busy contractor, time is money. If you don’t have a dedicated inside recruiter (and who does?), this will take you away from the revenue generating duties you need to focus on to grow your business.
If you are considering hiring a company to help with your recruiting efforts, here is a list of questions you should be asking:
- Does the company understand exterior remodeling?
- Does the company understand storm restoration?
- Does the company understand the seasonality of the business?
- Has the firm filled similar positions before?
- Do they know which skills the applicants need to have coming into the company and which skills can be nurtured?
- Is the company set up to teach your new hire about the exterior restoration industry?
- Can the company help train your new hire for processes your business needs?
